Indiana Public Retirement System

The Public Employees’ Retirement Fund (PERF) was created on July 1, 1945, to provide retirement and other benefits for state employees and public employees of state and local government entities (political subdivisions). The purpose of PERF is to provide retirement income for the exclusive benefit of eligible employees of participating employers and their designated beneficiaries. Plan benefits are paid from the contributions of participating employers and members plus returns on investment of assets. For more information on PERF, visit the INPRS website.

Honoring Our Heroes' Sacrifice

Hero’s Honor Line of Duty Special Death Benefit

A special death benefit was passed by the Indiana General Assembly. This benefit, called Hero's Honor, covers a line-of-duty death in the amount of $225,000. Eligible first responders may be enrolled into Hero's Honor. Asan employer, you may elect to purchase coverage at $100 per year for each of your employees.

This benefit applies to:

Emergency medical service providers employed by a person who has contracted with a political subdivision.


Emergency medical service providers performing air ambulance services employed by a health care system affiliated with a state educational institution.


Police officers and firefighters* who work for post-secondary educational institutions (non-state).


Police officers employed by an operator


Firefighters who work for a public-use airport that maintains a fire department.

If you elect to cover your police, firefighters, or emergency medical service staff, you must include your entire staff of police, firefighters, county and deputy coroners, or emergency medical service workers. The open enrollment period is from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. You will need to complete the form and submit it to:

The INRPS finance department will prepare an invoice based on the number of employees you want to cover. Your payment is due within 30 days of billing. One-year coverage begins on the latter of Jan. 1 or the date your payment is received.
